Literature
Literature or Reading is the study of novels and books. I use reader's workshop in my classroom most of the time. This means that my students have the freedom to choose the novels that interest them. They may choose from the school's or my library. They are still held responsible for reading, comprehending, analyzing, and even trying to convince their classmates to read the novels they choose. Reader's workshop allows my students to pick interest level books that are geared towards their particular reading level.
At least once a quarter, the students will also read a book together as a class. Though these books are often more challenging, they allow the class to become engaged in discussions together and more deeply analyze their particular selection. The books that each grade may read is listed below.
