Service Hour Information for 7th and 8th Graders
We expect all of our 7th and 8th grade students to fulfill the 18 hour service requirement before May 1, 2015
The purpose of the Holy Name Student Service Program is to encourage and guide our junior high students in living this Gospel message. This program is designed to expose our students to the personal rewards of helping others through giving individual time and talents to this effort. We wish to challenge our students to move outside their comfort zone…just a little…to meet people they would not normally meet and to do things they normally would not do. All of this would be done under the supervision of qualified adults and in carefully selected locations.
We think our students need to realize how blessed they are to have the Christian education they’re receiving and because they are given so many blessings, it’s important to share these blessings with the less fortunate. As adults we know that it often takes doing community service and improvement to realize that there is a need for it, in the first place.
We are asking our 7th and 8th grade students to experience 9 hours of service outside of regular school time during the 1st semester of this school year and 9 hours during the 2nd semester (18 hours total). At least one required service project will be arranged each semester (3 hours total) and Holy Name teachers will supervise these groups. We ask that students make their own arrangements to fulfill the remaining 6 hours of required service each semester. While there are many service opportunities available on our campus, it is our hope that the majority of these required hours be at off-campus sites. There will be a list of service opportunities and potential service sites made available to each student and posted in the classrooms. There is a maximum number of students who may participate in each opportunity. This number is provided by the organization where service will be performed.
We thank you for your support of this program which will certainly help our students be prepared for high school service requirements and also give them the personal knowledge of living the gospel message of Jesus. In the spring of 2014, we implemented a reward program for the students that go "above and beyond" the minimum requirements.
