Jr. High Special Projects
Throughout the year there will be some special projects that involve the Jr. High. This page will have the timelines, rubrics and other information about those projects.
Thanks to generous grants from CenturyLink, Target, NETA and Kiwanis, we will be sponsoring two major projects this year using our new tablet computers.
Cultural Heritage Project:
The Jr. High students at Holy Name School will develop their cultural awareness skills through a technology project using Asus MeMO Pad HD 7 tablet computers and IPad minis. The pads will be used to conduct interviews with community members of a minimum of 10 different cultures and to develop innovative presentations about their discoveries and incites based on those conversations. The interviews will take place either face to face or through Skype. Questions will be developed by the classes geared towards obtaining as much cultural background as possible. These results will be used to create multi-media presentations about the cultural awareness to present to the student body at Holy Name. Presentations will be shared online through a variety of media including but not limited to: FaceBook, school webpages, YouTube, Voice Thread, Aurasma (Augmented Reality), etc. The ultimate goal of the project will be to develop in Holy Name Students awareness of the differences between cultures, problems arising from those differences, dialogs needing to occur to facilitate peaceful solutions and to enhance cooperation between those cultures. These skills will be shared with the global community and applied to their school and job relationships in the future.
Science/Social Studies Fair:
Holy Name 6th through 8th grade students and their teachers will combine tablet computing, graphic design, research, composition and presentation skills for an authentic assessment highlighting historical figures (8th grade), foreign countries/cultures (6th) and science experiments (7th) during the 2014-2015 school year. The tablet computers and apps will be used within each of their classrooms to research, write and design project pieces needed for their chosen topic. The students will be required to enhance their presentations using their tablet computers with either video, animation or graphical segments. Once the project is completed, the students will present for their parents, the community and the student body. Since not every student will have a tablet, presentations will occur on a rotating basis so all students can augment their project with multi-media.
